Nov 7 - Election Night: Acceptance Speech

Nov07_podiumaThank you, Colorado!

Eighteen months ago, this campaign started with a small group of supporters. Look at you now!

To the voters of Colorado -- thank you! This is an honor and a privilege.

And the best way to thank you is to govern well. That's absolutely what Barbara O'Brien and I intend to do.

We've been given a rare opportunity to govern differently, to govern the way we campaigned, to say that every place in Colorado, every person in Colorado, matters.

We're going to govern a unified and united Colorado. This is one state. This not urban vs. rural. This is not Western Slope vs. Front Range. This is not even Republican vs. Democrat. We don't fulfill the Colorado Promise as Democrats. We fulfill it together as Coloradans.

I said when I accepted the nomination in Greeley that this election would be about cynics vs. those who hope. I had no idea how right I would be. Fortunately, the hopeful -- those who want to walk with us and work with us to fulfill the Colorado Promise -- prevailed.

But we must not forget the cynics. We must work to convert them and give them hope about the legitimate role that government can play in people's lives.

We are going to close the partisan divide and do what's best for this one state. We'll do that by looking for the common ground, by staying true to the center and always doing what's right and what's responsible.

I will govern this state as a gatekeeper on good public policy. We will do what's best for the entire state so that we can deliver on the Colorado Promise for all Coloradans so that we can solve real problems.

The Colorado Promise means we will reform our education system.

The Colorado Promise means we will insure the uninsured and create a Colorado Health Plan for the 770,000 people who lack health care coverage in Colorado.

The Colorado Promise means we will establish a New Energy Economy and make Colorado a national and global renewable energy leader.

Nov07_podiumbThe Colorado Promise means we will serve as stubborn stewards of our environment. And the Colorado we turn over to our children and our grandchildren will not be inferior to the one we found.

Is this ambitious? Is it bold and daring? Absolutely. We only achieve our goals -- we only fulfill the Colorado Promise -- by having the courage and the determination to try.

Campaigns are always hardest on our families. I would like to thank my wife, Jeannie, and our children, Tally, Sam, Abe, and August for coming along on this journey.

I also need to thank my mother, Ethel Ritter, and the army of Ritter siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws who got involved and helped bring this home. Wherever we went on the campaign trail, there was always a Ritter there.

I also need to thank the dozens of interns and volunteers who gave this campaign an incredible sense of youth, energy and excitement. We could not have done this without them.

We absolutely could not have done this without my incredible campaign staff, and especially campaign manager Greg Kolomitz, who put together and executed a tremendous campaign plan.

Finally, let me close by saying this ... On our way back from Colorado Springs today, we drove past SkyRidge Medical Center. This morning, Keller Kuna and Trey Thomas were born at SkyRidge, just as there were babies born in hospitals all across Colorado today.

Keller, Trey and those other babies represent the hope and promise of a new day, a clean slate. This election is about them. It's about their future. It's about fulfilling the Colorado Promise for them.

Oct 4 - Workers Deserve Fair Wage

Bill Ritter on the minimum wage and Amendment 42:

This country decided long ago that a minimum wage was important, but it has been nearly a decade since the minimum wage was increased. This measure will help ensure that all Coloradans are able to earn a livable wage.

Sept 28 - Rocky Talk Live with Mark Wolf

Rocky Talk Live with Mark Wolf hosted Bill today between 12:15 and 12:45 pm:

Mark_Wolf (Q) You were involved in family notification after the Columbine shootings and later served on the Columbine commission. What kind of memories did the tragedy at Platte Canyon evoke for you?

Bill_Ritter (A) One of my clearest memories of the Columbine shooting is the face of the students at Columbine as they were being evacuated from the school. It was the picture of innocence lost. i feel terribly for the victim's family in the Platte Canyon shooting, and my thoughts and prayers are with them today. I also feel deep sympathy for all of the students who were impacted by yesterday's violence. We need to do all we can as a community to wrap our collective arms around them.

Mark_Wolf (Q) In the wake of what happened at Platte Canyon, would you propose any additional measures relating to school security?

Bill_Ritter (A) I don't feel we know all we need to know about the situation to begin proposing measures to address the situation. I believe we should always be involved in a public dialougue about how we as a society can prevent such tragic incidents.

Mark_Wolf (Q) Via e-mail from Emily: What are your plans to create an alternative energy industry in Colorado. We need energy independence and a new industry which will create jobs here in Colorado.

Bill_Ritter (A) I believe that Colorado is poised to become a leader in the generation and production of renewable energy. We have the resources and the research partners to move forward in the development of wind, solar and biofuel energy. For a more detailed discussion please check out my New Energy Economy plan on my website at www.Ritterforgovernor.com

kristof65 (Q) One of the things that has upset me most about this tradgedy is that already, just over 24 hours after this ordeal began, it is already being politicized with Democrats accusing Repuplicans, and vice versa for "allowing" this to happen. Are you going to politicize this event as well as part of your campaign?

Bill_Ritter (A) No. I will not politicize this incident. This is a tragedy all the way around.

Mark_Wolf (Q) via e-mail from David: If a bill landed on your desk proposing to repeal the "make my day" law, would you sign it? If so, why?

Bill_Ritter (A) I would not sign the bill.

Bobster (Q) I read that your favorite movies are Crash and Blazing Saddles, why those two?

Bill_Ritter (A) I thought Crash dealt with a very sensitive subject -- the right and wrong assumptions we make about people--in a very real and honest way. Blazing Saddles, on the other hand, dealt with the topic of race and race relations, particularly using stereotypes, in a very funny way. I came out of both movies saying "This is one of the best movies I have ever seen."

Mark_Wolf (Q) You were recently the target of a Republican attack ad in which a tearful African-American mother whose 4-year-old daughter was killed by a hit-and-run driver called you a liar and said you'd given the convicted motorist a "slap on the wrist" penalty. While even Republican Attorney General John Suthers has praised your 12-year-record as Denver district attorney, how do you defend yourself against such ads, given that more may be coming?

Bill_Ritter (A) I will continue to respond as I have in the past. I am proud of my record as District Attorney. The people in my office worked very hard every day to protect the community of Denver. While I was the DA, my office sent over 12,000 people to prison. It is not a statistic I brag about, but I don't apologize for it either. I am sad that Trailhead and other Beauprez allies have chosen to exploit the tragic death of a small girl for political gain. Finally, we will do everything we can to point out the false and/or misleading nature of any advertisements, as we did in the ad you mention.

Bill_Ritter (P) I am sorry I was unable to answer all of your questions. I type a little too slowly to be much of a blogger. Thanks for your attention to this race. Bill

Mark_Wolf (P) Thanks to Bill Ritter and for all the good questions.

Sept 1 - Bill Discusses His Work as DA

Sept01_brjr "As expected, the Republicans have gone up on TV with their first negative attack ad. They're attacking my record as District Attorney. They're twisting numbers, distorting the truth, and using Washington-style politics to attack my record here in Colorado."

"I'm proud of my record. We put more than 12,000 criminals in prison, and had a 95% conviction rate. Those aren't numbers I brag about, but I don't apologize for them either. We protected the public and we served the taxpayers well."

"Rest assured we will not let these attacks go unchallenged, but more importantly, we will continue to frame this race the way we want to frame it. This race is about fulfilling the Colorado promise. It's about the future and leaving our children and grandchildren with a 21st Century Colorado we can be proud of."

"Thank you for your support."

August 21 - A Smarter Way to Lead

What a fantastic week we had – and the rest of August promises to be just as exciting. Here’s the latest from the campaign trail and a taste of what’s to come:

COLORADO’S ECONOMIC ENGINE: Earlier today I released my job-growth and business-development plan, laying out my vision for improving Colorado’s economy in the 21st Century. And last week I unveiled my ideas for crafting a smarter and more efficient state budget. Driving Colorado’s economic engine forward is a key component of the campaign, and my proposals are generating enthusiasm in Colorado’s business community.

MOMENTUM IS BUILDING: Two new polls are adding to our momentum. A 9News/SurveyUSA poll shows I’m leading Congressman Beauprez 50 percent to 40 percent. A second poll released early last week by Rasmussen Reports gives me a 9-point lead.

TIME TO GET BUSY: While the poll numbers are encouraging, it’s still August and the race will come down to the wire. That’s why I need your help. If you have signed up to volunteer but have not yet been contacted, please e-mail volunteer coordinator Esteban Salazar or call him at 303.534.0660.

PUEBLO OFFICE OPENING: Join me in Pueblo at 12:30 p.m. this Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the campaign’s Pueblo office! The office is located at 305 N. Santa Fe Ave., and the Open House will go from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Contact Sylvia Marez-Fransua by e-mail or phone at 719.542.1757.

IN THE NEWS: Media outlets across Colorado are starting to pay closer attention to the race. The coverage has helped demonstrate the very clear differences between me and the Congressman. Some recent articles:

FULFILLING COLORADO’S PROMISE: Out on the campaign trail, I talk often about fulfilling the Colorado promise. On Monday, Aug. 28, we are hosting a “Fulfilling the Promise” fundraising dinner at Mile High Station in Denver. To receive an invitation or for more information, please e-mail Amber Belindo or call her at 303.534.0660.

FORT COLLINS FUNDRAISER: On Wednesday, Aug. 30, state Sen. Bob Bacon and several others will host an evening fundraiser in Fort Collins. Amber is also the contact person for that event.

OVER THE RADIO WAVES: Our second radio ad is now airing statewide. Click here to listen to the 60-second spot. Colorado Public Radio also is running a weekly series of interviews with myself and Congressman Beauprez. Click here for the “Colorado Matters” schedule and links to some of the interviews.

Thank you again for all of your support. For more information about the campaign, visit the website, e-mail us at info@ritterforgovernor.com, call us at 303.534.0660, or stop in at 1100 Bannock St., Denver.

July 11-12: Bill's Comments on the Special Session and Immigration

On the Successful Conclusion of the Legislature's Special Session: (July 11)

I'm pleased that the legislature, led by Senate President FitzGerald and House Speaker Romanoff, has passed a package of bills that are tough, fair, and effective. Colorado isn't DC, and the Colorado legislature has done what Congressman Bob Beauprez and DC are unwilling to do - actually pass measures that amount to substantive immigration reform.

And if it was important enough for the Colorado legislature to go into special session at a cost of $15,000 a day, it's important enough for Congress to solve the problem before the August recess. Congressman Bob Beauprez talks a lot about immigration. Now it's time for him to follow the lead of our Colorado legislature and propose responsible and achievable reforms. To date, he has not done that. We don't need field hearings in Colorado, we need action in Washington.

About Amnesty and the Bush Plan for Undocumented Workers: (July 12)

I oppose amnesty. And unlike Congressman Beauprez, I agree with President Bush. As the President himself put it, "Amnesty means you're automatically a citizen. I don't think that makes sense." The President and I also agree on another point - Bob Beauprez and his colleagues in DC need to act soon, not put the issue on hold.

What I do support is the President’s proposal to make those who have been here for a long time, who have worked for many years and paid taxes, go to the back of the line, behind those who have followed the rules. And the President has also said, "The right thing to do is to recognize that if you've been here illegally, that there ought to be a cost for doing so, but also recognize there are decent, hardworking people that have contributed to our society at the same time."

Bob Beauprez apparently can’t understand either what amnesty means, what the President means, or what I mean when I say I oppose it.

July 6 - Letter to Colorado Sportsmen

Dear Colorado Outdoorsmen,

The campaign trail is a breathtakingly beautiful place. Over the past year, I've visited every corner of Colorado and met with thousands of people in some of the most stunning natural settings this state has to offer. I've even managed to sneak away from the campaign trail for a few hours of solitude and fly fishing. We are blessed to live in Colorado. Our pristine wilderness areas, rivers, streams, and forestlands are second-to-none. The same goes for our rich history of hunting, fishing, and sportsmen activities. As governor, I will serve as a stubborn steward of the land. I will provide strong leadership that protects our outdoor heritage for generations to come. I will bring together sportsmen, conservationists, and others to stand up to Washington when necessary. I will seek a balanced approach when it comes to public access and private property rights. And I will make sure that outdoorsmen are well-represented on state boards and commissions.

As the November election draws near, I invite you to get involved in my campaign. We have created a Sportsmen's Page where you can read my Sportsmen and Our Great Outdoors position paper. You also can sign up to volunteer, receive Sportsmen News updates and weekly e-mails, request a yard sign, make a contribution, and view the latest photos and videos from the campaign trail. With your help, we can fulfill what I call the Colorado Promise. Please take action and get involved today!

June 27 - The Ritters in Zambia, Africa: 1987 to 1990

One of the most important times in my life was the three-year period that Jeannie and I spent in Africa. We were volunteers in Zambia running a food distribution and nutrition center as lay missionaries for the Catholic Church.

Every month, we trucked more than 60 tons of food 400 miles from the capital city to our depot in Mongu. From there, we distributed the food deep into the sub-Saharan bush. We started poultry, fishery, and community-building programs. We taught women the importance of good nutrition and food preparation for their families. Nearly one-third of all Zambian children suffered from chronic malnourishment. And as AIDS began to spread across Africa, we taught basic health care.

When we arrived in Africa, our son August was just one year old. He became fast friends with the local children, and our second son, Abe, was born there.

Despite overwhelming poverty and despair, the Zambian people showed incredible strength, hope, and grace. I gained a deep appreciation for the frailty of the human condition. I also learned valuable lessons about listening to people, understanding their struggles, and walking with them toward a better tomorrow.

Today, I am humbled to share with you a glimpse into our life in Africa. We have added a new Africa web page to the campaign website. Please take a few moments to watch a short video and view a photo slideshow on the web page.

June 17 - "Remember This Day"

"Remember this day. It's the first day of our Energy Tour and it demonstrates this campaign's commitment to providing leadership around renewable energy. Remember this day, because in twenty years it will be the norm to drive a vehicle that is not powered by fossil fuels. Remember this day, because we are at a turning point in this country. We will create new jobs and stimulate the economy. We will protect our environment and address global warming, and we will establish a secure and independent energy future for our children and our grandchildren. Colorado is home to tremendous intellectual resources and natural resources. By capitalizing on our wind, solar, and biofuel resources, by concentrating on conservation and efficiency, and by focusing on cleaner ways to extract and use fossil fuels, we will lead the way into the 21st century and end our reliance on foreign oil."

June 9 - Bill's Progress Report

What a busy week! There’s so much to tell you about ... from a new poll to outstanding fundraising figures to growing support for the campaign from the business community! We continue to gain momentum at a fast pace. Here are the latest developments:

NEW POLL: The latest Rasmussen Reports poll shows me leading the race for governor 43% to 38%. My favorables remain high while Congressman Beauprez’s remain low. These findings are consistent with nearly every survey we’ve seen over the past year.

FUNDRAISING: You did it again! For the second month in a row, we raised more funds than the two Republicans combined! Read more. Let’s do it again in June!

GROWING SUPPORT: Last year, I supported Ref C, as did the state’s business community and moderate Republicans. Congressman Beauprez and Marc Holtzman did not – and now they want to reverse Ref C’s gains. Read this Denver Post story about how that’s hurting them and helping me.

AMENDMENT 38: Earlier this week, I submitted an op-ed article to newspapers around the state about Amendment 38. This ballot measure makes it even easier to place initiatives on future ballots. This would wreak havoc on our economy and throw all levels of government into turmoil. But Congressman Beauprez and Mr. Holtzman support this dangerous idea.

WATER: I challenged Congressman Beauprez to come clean over his true position about Colorado’s water issues this week. He’s saying different things to different groups. We need candid, responsible leadership, and common-sense solutions, not pandering and empty rhetoric. Read today's story in the Montrose Daily Press.

ENDORSEMENTS: I’ve picked up important endorsements from state Rep. Buffie McFadyen, Colorado Veterans for America, and the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Association.

I NEED YOU: Please get involved today. Visit my website and sign up to volunteer, or make a contribution. Encourage your friends, family, and co-workers to join the Ritter-O’Brien Action Team as well.

For more information about the campaign and how to get involved, e-mail us at info@ritterforgovernor.com, call us at 303.534.0660, or visit us at 1100 Bannock St. in Denver.

Sincerely,

Bill

The General Election Starts Now!

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office has just confirmed that Republican candidate for governor Marc Holtzman did not qualify for the ballot. For us, this means the general election starts now! We always knew this would come down to a two-person race. Whether the race starts in June or in August, we are absolutely ready!

A general election match-up against Congressman Beauprez will give Colorado voters a very clear choice. Does this state want a responsible leader with a clear vision for the 21st century? Or do we want a sitting member of a fiscally irresponsible, scandal-plagued Congress who also votes in virtual lockstep with the president.

Now more than ever, my running mate Barbara O’Brien and I need your support. We can win this election and fulfill what I call the Colorado Promise. We can reform our schools and deliver the best-educated workforce in the nation. We can assure access to high-quality and affordable health care for all Coloradans. We can make Colorado a leader in a New Energy Economy. And we can do it together!

Please get involved today. Visit my website and sign up to volunteer, receive my regular e-mail updates or make a contribution. Talk to your friends, family and co-workers and encourage them to join the Ritter Action Team as well.

Please send me your thoughts at bill@ritterforgovernor.com
